Transatlantic cables are cables that have been laid along the ocean floor to connect North America and Europe. Before the advent of radio, the only means of communication across the Atlantic Ocean was to physically connect the continents with a transatlantic telegraph cable, which was operative in 1867. The exchange rate between the United States dollar and British pound is still colloquially known as "cable" by financial marketeers on account of the fact that the rate was originally transmitted via a transatlantic cable.

.......or, why do we call buy position long and sell position short?
Ignored
I thoought to that too, but the only posible result that i could get was that the nickname for long comes from stock maket(when you buy you keep them for a long time, ussualy, for profit)

I know I owe you some money but right now I'm a little Short on Cash {I don't own it.} I sold my money to someone else for a brand new BBQ. But that's OK because I have a friend who wants to buy the BBQ and THEN I will be Long on Cash}
[actually flat but hope you get my drift.]

I always thought it was long because the exchange rate was getting longer, ie: EUR/JPY goes from 99.00 to 100.00
And of course, short because the exchange rate is getting smaller, or decreasing.
I could be wrong lol.

I am not aware of how the terms going long or short came about, but if you think about it a market can only go so low or short (i.e. zero "0") but the sky is the limit on the buy side or long.
Naturally this applies to any tradable market - not just currencies.
